Victor L. Lechtenberg is the interim vice president for government relations. He served as Purdue University’s Interim Provost from July 2007 until June 2008. Previously, he served two years as Vice Provost for Engagement and 10 years as Dean of Agriculture. As dean, Lechtenberg was responsible for Purdue University's teaching, research, and extension education programs for agriculture and natural resources. As Vice Provost, Dr. Lechtenberg worked to align the university's intellectual and other resources to assist in the state's economic growth and to address the myriad of challenges facing the state's business and industry.

Lechtenberg has been an active leader on the state and national levels with respect to research and technology policy and an advocate for technology related economic growth in the food, agriculture, and natural resource sectors. He chaired the USDA's National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education, and Economics Advisory Board from 1996-2002. He has also served as President of Crop Science Society of America and as President of the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST). He is a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy and Crop Science Society of America.

Lechtenberg received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1967 from the University of Nebraska, where he was an Agriculture Honors Program Graduate. He received his Ph.D. degree in Agronomy from Purdue University in 1971.
